Formation and function of neuronal circuits

Neuronal circuits are the underlying determinants of every behavior ranging from reflexes to advanced cognitive functions. The functional unit of neuronal circuits, the nerve cell, becomes interconnected through intricate developmental processes that are not fully understood.

Our research focuses on the emergence of neuronal circuitry and the underlying genetic determinants. Moreover, we wish to elucidate mechanisms that make neuronal circuits functional and assign identities of the nerve cells in specified circuits. Finally, another goal is to define the purpose of recognizable and explicit neuronal populations.
