The Department of Neuroscience at Uppsala University is now host to the secretariat of the Scandinavian Physiological Society (SPS). Founded in 1925, the society objectives are to promote research and interest in physiological sciences in its member countries. This is achieved by arranging meetings and congresses and support members by travel grants and activities. The society also publishes a well-reputed journal, Acta Physiologica, which is one of the oldest physiological journals in the world. SPS is a member of Federation of European Physiological Societies (FEPS).

The administration moves between different member countries, and at present, it is situated in Uppsala, Sweden. Prof. Bryndis Birnir, Secretary General, and Dr. Markus Sjöblom, Meeting Secretary, are both at the Department of Neuroscience. President prof. Anders Arner and Chief Editor for Acta Physiologica, prof. Jan Henriksson, reside at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm.
